Alpha India EE - Reviewing the short side

Our preferred minor view on the Indian market remains negative. We are looking at the current leg up as a second wave correction which should complete soon (near 6,050-6,100 levels in the case of NIFTY). The alternate view suggests a completed (a)-(b)-(c) corrective structure down and now a potential new impulse up. Above 6,100 levels our alternate positive view strengthens.

The updated Numeric Ranking continues to suggest Punj Lloyd, Suzlon, Housing Development and Infrastructure and Tech Mahindra as worst performers which are most likely to outperform over the next weeks. On the upper side, we have Federal Bank, Canara Bank, Bajaj Auto, Bank of Baroda and Cummins as top performers and potential underperformers in the weeks ahead.

A second corrective wave up is a time of alertness and caution in the case of the short side of the portfolio. The Rieki portfolio currently carries 5 shorts. Cummins is retesting previous highs at 810 levels while Rieki made a potential head and shoulders formation which looks ready to break the neckline. Both weekly and daily RSI look negative, while 60MIN RSI is over reactive and suggests a turn from here. However, a break above previous highs would negate our negative view. Tata Motors is also retesting previous highs at 1,350. Weekly RSI and Rieki are still positive, suggesting that another leg up could happen before anything. Bank of Baroda, Federal Bank and Bajaj Auto structures look like completing second corrective waves up. Key levels to watch lie at 990 for Bank of Baroda, 470 for Federal Bank and 1,620 for Bajaj Auto. A break above respective resistances would suggest further positivity and potential new highs.

Performance cycles (Rieki) is a term coined by Orpheus Capitals. This is another name for time triads, time arbitrage, time fractals but expressed in terms of relative performance. Time arbitrage, Time Triads, Time fractals are terms coined by Orpheus Research. Rieki is a bounded oscillator that moves in a range say from 1 to 30. 1 is top relative performance and 30 is worst performance. The idea is that performance is cyclical. A top performer will underperform in future and vice versa. A top relative performer is also the worst value pick and the top relative underperformer is the best value pick.

Alpha India - The best buy

Last week we talked about the best sell and we explained that worst rankers can be generated in the same way as top rankers. After we have the worst rankers, the next step is to look at the Rieki for confirmation.

Punj Lloyd, Suzlon, Tech Mahindra, Housing Development, Sterlite and Jaiprakash have bottoming Rieki, while India Bulls, Patni Computer Systems and Reliance Capital Rieki has already bottomed, suggesting the start of their outperformance. Suzlon and India Bulls are confirmed by the naked trending system, which gave a buy signal on both a few days back. Nifty VIX Rieki has also bottomed and suggests a further rise in volatility in the weeks ahead. We also have a running positive call on INR futures (NIRc1), confirmed by a bottoming Rieki.

We continue to look at an up but topping structure on all major indices, while a clear break sub the minor trend channel supports on Nifty would confirm the expected reversal. We have talked about Nifty VIX upside and Indian Rupee reversal near 44 as a negative case for equity.

Generating pairs after identifying best buys is easy. Buy (hold) the worst and sell (reduce) the best. The radar charts illustrate the worst and top rankers generated by our system for this week.

Econohistory is the study of performance cycles between assets. Cycles are the generic name for time fractals. Performance cycles can be studied for any time frame, for as small as a tick data to multiyear time frames. This objective approach to performance cyclicality can explain why intermarket analysis is an area of study? Why bonds and commodities tend to be inversely related? What is the connection of Oil with world markets? Why the world watches DOW sometimes and sometimes a 500 point effect on DOW seems to have no impact? Why correlation between assets moves from near perfect at times to weak correlation at other times? Why the same news has different impact on a stock or market? Why equities and bond trend together and why the relationship decouples sometime? When will inflation become deflation, disinflation, stagflation or hyperinflation? When and why does gold outperform and underperform silver? Econohistory can objectively answer these questions, using performance cycles, time fractals and past data. Alpha India - The best sell

Does a market always have best sell and best buy stocks? If buy and sell are replaced by hold and reduce, there are always best buys and best sells at all times. Our ranking system is a simple way to find out top rankers i.e. top performers. And considering performance is cyclical, Nifty is still moving around 6,000, Nifty VIX is consolidating around 20 and is at a cycle low, it would be interesting to rank the market components. This is what we did. We generated top rankers.

Alpha India - The IDEA case

Since performance is cyclical, the best asset is the one which outperformed the most over the examined period and therefore is the most likely to underperform in the next period of time. The worst asset is the one which underperformed the most till this moment and therefore is the most likely to outperform in the period ahead. IDEA was at the top of the Numeric Ranking a few weeks back and we said then that it should start underperforming as the cycle starts to push lower. Now the stock started to underperform as anticipated and became a good short opportunity.

Best vs. Worst

The idea of performance cycles is built around divergence between the worst and the best. After a certain time the best and worst reverse polarity. The histogram carries a 6 month return comparative between few best and worst Nifty blue chips. SBI, ITC were the best and Suzlon, Jaiprakash and Reliance were the worst. After we ranked the stocks on performance we looked at the Rieki (performance cycles) for the respective stocks.

Performance Cycles (Rieki) on nine major forex pairs gives a global perspective.

Alpha.India - The Siemens case

Performance cycles work remarkably in combination with the price structure itself and can be used as an oscillator to confirm or nonconfirm the view. They can also help differentiate between preferred and alternate scenarios. Given the fact that the assets are now plotted against INR, the signals are absolute.

Let us show you what this means through an example. We have a fresh buy signal on Siemens. We illustrated here the price structure along with the respective performance cycles. As you can see, the cycles look bottoming and suggest further outperformance of Siemens in the weeks ahead. This further confirms our positive view illustrated on the price structure. We see this as an ongoing impulse up with a potential immediate resistances at psychological 800 levels. The (iii) wave up should complete near respective resistances, after which we should see a pending fourth and fifth leg to complete the impulse. Siemens is also the best buy according to the Numeric Ranking filter.

The long only – short only tracker carries 13 positive signals. The top winners remain SBI with 31% gains, NSEBANK with 24% gains, ICBK with 23% gains and HDBK with 22% gains. Our pair tracker carries two running pairs: Sun – Maruti which is up 4% and Nifty – Tata Power which is up 6%.

Tisco, Bharti and IDEA remain at the top of the Numeric Ranking and are most likely to underperform in the weeks ahead. At the bottom we have ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Hero Honda as the worst current performers which are most likely to outperform in the next few weeks. On the sector side, Consumer Durables and BSEBANK remain at the top, followed by Nifty. BSEOIL and Healthcare remain at low rankings, while the Volatility Index pushes higher in rankings as anticipated.

Our overall view on the India market remains up but topping and we expect an intermediate reversal soon. Nifty made a daily Key Reversal bar near psychological 6,000 levels and the subminor structure down looks impulsive. The daily RSI momentum above 70 levels continues to suggest an overbought situation. The rise in volatility also suggests that the expected reversal might be here. However, we need further price confirmation to validate our view.

Alpha.India - Long only, short only special

The long only – short only perspective gives naked signals for individual stocks and indices. LOSO is based on a trending system and has a different mechanism compared to the pair strategy. The signals are absolute, either plain long or plain short and should not be mixed with pair signals, which are relative in nature. This means that at times a long stock on LOSO can be on the short side (or the underperforming side of a pair) as an underperformer can still give absolute positive returns and vice versa.

We have been mentioning an ongoing outperformance of Banks for a while now and the positive signal we had on LOSO is still running. SBI is our top winner with 29% returns, followed by NSEBANK and ICBK with 23% each. HDBK is also up 17%. We illustrated here the return line for our top three winners. All three performance cycles are still positive, suggesting that we might see further positivity before reaching our anticipated banking underperformance. However, we will review and close the signals if gains begin to drop.

Tisco is back at the top of the Numeric Ranking, followed by IDEA and Bharti. This means that Tisco is the stock which outperformed the most till now and since performance is cyclical, the stock is the most likely to underperform in the next few weeks. ITC is still at the bottom, preceded by Hero Honda and Reliance Infrastructure. This again means that ITC is the stock which underperformed the most till now and is the most likely to outperform in the next weeks. On the sector side we have no change in the extremes: Consumer Durables and BSEBANK are the best and NIFTY VIX and BSEOIL are still the worst.

We have updated our pair strategy and are starting a new version today ( 19 Sep 2010). We have reviewed our pair signals and we have three fresh ones: SUN – GAIL, RELIANCE – TATA POWER and SUN – MARUTI started today. We also have a running signal in the case of the NIFTY – TATA POWER pair which is already up 8%. TATA POWER and SUN have topping performance cycles, meanwhile GAIL, RELIANCE and MARUTI are bottoming and should outperform in the weeks ahead.

Time comes before everything, but we don’t see it. We just feel it. We believe what we see and this is why understanding what we don’t see is a challenge. Understanding time could bring more than a conventional thought down, it’s a revolution, which could rock the very foundation of economic thought or the geometric structures Euclid laid down in 300 BC. We are at the start of the journey, but if time is indeed the real mathematics, we could see high accuracy in time forecasts.

Economic history is mathematical.

Alpha.India - Are Banks ready to underperform?

As illustrated in our long only – short only perspective, buying Indian Banks would have brought serious gains in the past few weeks (SBI – 24%, ICBK – 16%, NSEBANK – 16% and HDBK – 10%). The important question to ask here is whether this positive minor trend is still ongoing or the top is near. NSEBANK is at high rankings, suggesting that the positive performance might turn soon, triggering an underperformance of the Indian Banking stocks in the next few weeks.

We illustrated here our minor and intermediate view on the index. The larger view sees the current structure as a completing intermediate (Z) leg up which is heading to key resistances at psychological 12,000 levels. The daily view also suggests 12,000 as an important Fib confluence level. RSI momentum over 70 resistances and its non-confirmation also suggest an exhausting upmove. Therefore, our overall view on Banks is up but topping with a potential intermediate reversal near the mentioned resistance. The performance cycle is still positive, suggesting that 12,000 might happen before anything.

The Numeric Ranking suggests Tisco, IDEA and Bharti as the best stocks to sell and ITC, Hero Honda and Reliance Infrastructure as the best stocks to buy. On the sector side, Consumer Durables is still at the top (best sector to sell), followed by BSEBANK, BSEAUTO and NIFTY. The Volatility Index remains at the bottom, preceded by BSEOIL and Healthcare.

Our overall view on the Indian market remains up but topping. Nifty reached our anticipated resistances at 5,600-5,650 levels. Above respective resistances we are looking at a potential extension till 5,700-5,800 levels at most. The structure looks topping and both weekly and daily RSI suggest an exhaustion soon. The Volatility index made a new minor low (14.35 levels), but the overall structure and the bottoming performance cycle suggest a turn from here and a rise in volatility ahead. The Indian rupee moves in a corrective triangle structure which should complete near key supports at 46 levels. Above 47 our triangle scenario is confirmed.

Our long only – short only tracker carries four new buy signals on ACC, CNXIT, DLF and Infosys. The Numeric Ranking filter suggests Infosys as the best buy and Reliance as the best sell. The top winner is SBI, as mentioned prior, with 24% gains, followed by NSEBANK and ICBK. The positive signal on the respective winners is still running.

Alpha India

Alpha is a pair trading, long only - short only strategy and Numeric Ranking product based on TIME fractals. Time arbitrage, Time Triads, Time fractals are terms coined by Orpheus Research. The signals are carried over three different time frames viz. sub minor (2-3 days), minor (10-30 days) and intermediate (above 30 days). This is a daily signal product. The signals will be illustrated through tracker and running portfolios. Alpha can be used by fund managers for relative allocations, traders for leverage bets and high net worth clients for selective trades. This is a part of the time triads analytics developed by Orpheus Research.

Performance cycles is a term coined by Orpheus Capitals. This is another name for time triads, time arbitrage, time fractals but expressed in terms of relative performance. It’s a bounded oscillator that moves in a range say from 1 to 30. 1 is top relative performance and 30 is worst performance. The idea is that performance is cyclical. A top performer will underperform in future and vice versa. A top relative performer is also the worst value pick and the top relative underperformer is the best value pick.

Time arbitrage portfolio legs should be risk weighted before any implementation.
Coverage India: BSE Health Care and components
